Project Description
This page follows the community growing around OpenRoIS, the open-source middleware that implements the Robotic Interaction Service (RoIS) Framework 2.0 , which the Object Management Group (OMG) adopted as a formal specification in June 2026. It lists the platforms OpenRoIS supports and the ways to take part, so that the standard reaches more robots, avatars, and services.
With OpenRoIS, a developer writes a service application once against the standard RoIS interfaces and runs it on physical robots, virtual avatars, and AI services alike, locally or over the internet. Applications use the TypeScript SDK for the web or the C# SDK for Unity, and each platform joins through an adapter written with the Python SDK, which supports ROS 2. Connecting N applications to M platforms then takes N plus M integrations rather than N times M.
Coarobo GK and the OpenRoIS community develop OpenRoIS in the open under the Apache-2.0 license at https://github.com/openrois , with its documentation at https://openrois.org/ . Coarobo GK and researchers of the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR) and The University of Texas at Austin present its design in "OpenRoIS: A Community-Driven Open-Source Middleware Implementing the Robotic Interaction Service (RoIS) Framework for Physical Robots and Virtual Agents". The paper is under review for IEEE/SICE SII 2027 and available as the preprint arXiv:2609.21178 . OpenRoIS is alpha software, and its API may change until version 1.0.
