Coarobo GK Founder Co-Authors "HSRT-X" Paper on Community-Driven Robot Foundation Models for the HSR Platform

Osaka, JapanSeptember 26, 2025

Coarobo GK is pleased to announce that its President & Founder, Lotfi El Hafi, participated as a joint author in the HSRT-X project, a community-driven initiative to build robot foundation models for the Human Support Robot (HSR) platform of Toyota Motor Corporation. The project's findings were presented at the 42nd Annual Conference of the Robotics Society of Japan (RSJ) in September 2024.

The HSRT-X project united researchers from The University of Tokyo, Keio University, The University of Osaka, Kyushu Institute of Technology, Ritsumeikan University, and Toyota Motor Corporation, among others. The project established an end-to-end pipeline for collecting large-scale, language-annotated robot motion data across multiple sites and training foundation models for mobile manipulation tasks, building directly on the RT-X framework developed through a global network of research institutions.

A key component of the project's shared development infrastructure was derived from the containerized Software Development Environment (SDE) originally created by Lotfi El Hafi for the HSR Community. That environment was recognized with the HSR Community Research Encouragement Award from the Robotics Society of Japan in 2022 for lowering the barrier to entry for new research institutions and competition teams working with the HSR platform.

Several researchers who contributed to the HSRT-X project have since joined the AI Robot Association (AIRoA) , an industry-academia consortium developing open datasets and generative AI foundation models for robotics, where the same community-based infrastructure approach is likely to continue.

The HSRT-X project showed what becomes possible when a community of researchers shares not just data and models, but the infrastructure to collect and process them together. Building that kind of shared foundation is exactly the work that drives the field forward.
